Inauguration of the new Sommerberg funicular railway

For more than 100 years, the Sommerberg Funicular Railway, the highest funicular railway in Baden-Württemberg, has connected the center of Bad Wildbad with the Sommerberg. After an impressive complete renovation in 2011, it is now one of the most modern funicular railways in the whole of Germany.

From the Sommerberg plateau, 300 meters above the valley, you can enjoy magnificent views of the spa town and the heights of the Black Forest.

Not only does a ride on the Sommerbergbahn take you up to Bad Wildbad's sun terrace with its pure, clear Black Forest air, a wonderful view 300 meters above the valley, and a magnificent pine forest, but it is also an unforgettable experience. You can enjoy an impressive view of the characteristic vegetation of the Black Forest in the new, state-of-the-art panoramic cars of the Sommerbergbahn. From the top station, you can go for a walk on the flat paths, most of which are cleared in winter, and hike, for example, to the Wildseemoor nature reserve.

Separating pedestrians and bikers into separate compartments has improved the quality of the ride, while the separate biker entrance at the bottom station provides a pleasant waiting area for all Sommerbergbahn passengers. The Sommerbergbahn is completely barrier-free. People with disabilities can use it without restrictions. An elevator can be used at the top station in addition to flexible ramps.

Comfortable and, if necessary, faster transportation up the mountain is guaranteed by the new route and technology. Following the complete renovation, only the names of the two carriages will remain as a reminder of historical times: to commemorate the city's royal past, one carriage will bear the name Queen Charlotte and the other King Wilhelm II. The Württemberg royal couple stayed in Wildbad in 1910 and enjoyed riding the Sommerberg funicular.
